CBB FREE PICK: Florida State Seminoles at Indiana Hoosiers

#796 Indiana -1.5 (Tuesday, December 3 @ 9 pm EST)

Precarious spot for Florida State who last weekend won two hard fought neutral site grinders over Tennessee and Purdue. Both games had a postseason feel to them and came down to the final seconds.

This year’s FSU squad isn’t much different than past editions — stingy defense, long arms, and a deep bench. The difference, at least in the early going, is a lack of scoring prowess. Florida State had a slew of highly-efficient scorers with Mfiondu Kabengele (50% FG), Terance Mann (39% from three) and Christ Koumadje (63% FG) last season. All three are gone and the Seminoles, as a result, have really struggled to score. In games against Pittsburgh, Florida, Tennessee, and Purdue, they averaged 0.92 points per possession.

There’s obviously a bit of unknown with Indiana. While the Seminoles have played four games against quality power conference foes, the Hoosiers’ toughest game to date was against Louisiana Tech. But the one thing the Hoosiers do have that should help in this matchup is size with a front line that features Trayce Jackson-Davis, Justin Smith, and Joey Brunk. Purdue is a big team as well and the Boilermakers were able to outrebound FSU 48-33. The difference in the game was turnovers as Purdue coughed it up 24 times. That’s an obvious key to this game with IU point guard Devonte Green who can at times be turnover prone. And don’t sleep on Indiana’s defense (32nd in adjusted efficiency). They aren’t that far removed from the four teams that made scoring very difficult for Florida State.

Leonard Hamilton said it best following his team’s Emerald Coast Classic title: “We’re playing very hard, defending very well and playing unselfish but we have not gotten into sync yet,” Hamilton said on Monday. “We’re not a well oiled machine. We are still trying to find ourselves.”

They say defense travels but Florida State has been walking a fine line. Eventually their offensive discombobulation is going to cost them and tonight is a good situation for that to occur.
