CFB FREE PICK: UW-Green Bay Phoenix at New Mexico Lobos
#637 OVER 162 (Wednesday, November 13 @ 9 pm EST)
It appears by design that New Mexico scheduled two mediocre up-tempo teams to face at home to open the season. Head coach Paul Weir is desperately trying to turn around this once proud program and with attendance in decline, why not bring in some opponents that you can not only beat but score 90+ in doing so? That’s what went down last week as the Lobos dispatched Cal State Northridge, 97-70. Note that the Matadors were without their top scorer, Lamine Diane.
UW-Green Bay’s Linc Darner doesn’t mind traveling or stepping up in class in order to better prepare his team for Horizon play. Darner gets pegged as a coach that allows his teams to run wild and jack shots but he’s a bright mind. In his first season, despite a complete system overall, he led the Phoenix to the NCAA Tournament. And last season, after sitting 10-12, UWGB rallied, won 21 games, and reach the finals of the CIT. This season, the Phoenix will be without the services of do-everything guard Sandy Cohen who graduated by the remainder of the roster is loaded with upperclassmen. It was a tough draw to open the year at Purdue who boasts a top 20 defense. A sloppy game from both sides, the Boilermakers won comfortably, 79-57. Green Bay then fired back with a 115-64 win over DIII UW-Stout. Tonight, we can expect somewhere in between.
Obviously we’re going to see plenty of pace tonight; 80+ possessions wouldn’t come as a shock. And after dealing with a litany of injuries and off-the-court drama, New Mexico appears poised to have its best and most explosive offensive team under Weir. With an underdog that has shown no track record of attempting to shorten games when out-manned, there’s good potential for a 95-75 type game.
