MLB Betting Free Pick: Colorado Rockies at San Francisco Giants
FREE PICK: Colorado Rockies (Bettis) at San Francisco (Pomeranz)
#962 UNDER 8 (Friday, April 12 @ 10:15 pm EST)
Skim through FanGraph’s wRC+ rankings and you’ll notice that the San Francisco Giants and Colorado Rockies rank 29th and 30th respectively. The offense for both squads thus far has been nothing short of hideous. In last night’s game, the two teams combined for nine hits and a single run. Starters Jon Gray and Jeff Samardzija combined for 13 strikeouts. Tonight’s starting pitchers don’t carry much in the way of respect in the betting markets but both have to potential to prosper considering the severe step down in class. Colorado’s Chad Bettis and San Francisco’s Drew Pomeranz were both tasked with facing the Dodgers and Rays their first two outings. Bettis was torched for 11 runs in 5.1 innings while Pomeranz fared better with four runs in nine innings. Nowhere near the AL East and healthy, Pomeranz should offer some value this season. His velocity was noticeably up his first two starts and the 11 K’s vs. two strong lineups is a positive sign. Bettis doesn’t have much upside other than potentially pitching for his job. He’s obviously not built for Coors Field (5.77 ERA) but tonight is as good a situation as you’ll find for a quality start. Also note that CB Bucknor is behind the dish. In an era where umpire trends don’t hold much weight, Bucknor has been one of the strongest under umps in MLB with a record of 30-48-6 O/U since 2016.
