MLB Betting Free Pick: Houston Astros at Oakland A’s
FREE PICK: Houston Astros (Miley) at Oakland A’s (Montas)
#926 UNDER 9 (Wednesday, April 17 @ 10 pm EST)
Oakland’s Frankie Montas has all the tools to have a breakout season. A pro since 2010, Montas has bounced back and forth from team to team and reliever to starter. Only 26 years old, Montas is being given a chance to stick as a full-time start and through three outings, he’s looked the part. The only knock has been the four home runs allowed in 17 innings despite showing heavy ground ball tendencies (58.3%). Note however, three of the four came in hitter friendly Baltimore and Houston. He’ll face the Astros for a second time after allowing two runs in five innings two weeks ago in Houston. In spacious Oakland, tonight’s a decent matchup as Houston’s splits are far weaker vs. righties and Montas is historically tougher vs. righties, something the Astros have plenty of.
Wade Miley is also a good fit for tonight’s ballpark as well as the free swinging Athletics. He rolled through the A’s lineup earlier this year (5.2 IP, 4 hits, 0 ERs). A crafty veteran lefty, Miley offers some betting value as the Astros are obviously one of the best teams in MLB and have a strong track record of maximizing their pitching talent.
Both bullpens should be in decent shape. Oakland’s was worked a little in last night’s 9-1 loss but Blake Treinen, who hasn’t thrown since April 12, is available for more than three outs should the need arise. Lou Trivino also hasn’t thrown since that game. And Houston’s pen has been one of the best in MLB with a 2.90 FIP.
