CFB FREE PICK: Temple Owls at USF Bulls
#111 Temple -1.5 (Friday, November 8 @ 8 pm EST)
Temple’s bye week came at the perfect time. After opening the season 5-1 including a win over Memphis, the Owls were overwhelmed by the high-powered offenses of SMU and UCF in back-to-back weeks. The competition lightens this weekend with a trip to Tampa to take on one-dimensional South Florida.
USF’s four wins were largely predicated on the fact that they didn’t need to pass. In wins over UConn and East Carolina, the Bulls ran the ball a combined 82 times while attempting only 47 passes. The Pirates and Huskies currently rank 10th and 11th respectively in total defense in AAC play. At some point, the Bulls are going to need to move that ball through the air in order to compete but it’s hard to trust their current set up with two frosh quarterbacks taking all of the snaps. They also showed their cards by using Jah’Quez Evans in the wildcat vs. ECU. Rarely used, Evans rushed for 99 yards. Should Evans play (he’s questionable), Temple has film and two weeks to prep for him.
Temple’s overall defensive numbers are respectable (5.1 ypp allowed) but also somewhat skewed considering the Owls faced three top 20 offenses the last three weeks (note that USF has yet to play UCF and Memphis and allowed 48 points vs. SMU). In their prior five games, Temple allowed less than 300 ypg. Despite a few “big” offensive showings against soft defenses, USF’s offense doesn’t appear built to chug up and down the field. And with time to prepare, Temple’s Rod Carey (3-0 ATS L3 Seasons including last year’s outright win as +6.5 dogs at BYU) is far more trustworthy than USF’s Charlie Strong.
