CFB FREE PICK: Wake Forest Demon Deacons at Boston College Eagles

#115 OVER 68.5 (Saturday, September 28 @ 3:30 pm EST)

There’s two ways to look at Boston College’s 30-16 win over Rutgers. On one side, a defense that allowed 48 to Kansas gave up only 16. But on the other side, we can’t help but notice the Scarlet Knights had two turnovers and more importantly gained 6.3 yards per play. That doesn’t exactly scream that BC’s defense has been shored up. And it’s unlikely it will be moving forward considering how ultra-young the unit is top to bottom. Needless to say, we don’t have much confidence that the Eagles are going to hold Wake Forest’s fast-paced and efficienct offense in check.

The Demon Deacons are a tough offense to prepare for because they can attack you on the ground (three games 200+ yards) and through the air (330 ypg) and do so at a ridiculously fast pace. Wake ran 105 plays in its 38-35 win over Utah State in Week 1. Rice tried to play keep-away but Wake still produced 513 yards and 41 points despite running only 62 plays. It’s an offense that is perfectly calibrated to move the football and score big points against soft defenses which is a perfect way to describe Boston College.

The other thing to consider is the pace in which both teams like to play. Even though Boston College’s defense is an obvious weakness, the Eagles are operating at one of the fastest tempos in college football (1 snap every 20 seconds). And Wake Forest isn’t that far behind at 22 seconds per snap.

Not a ton of wiggle room with the total bet up to 68.5 but enough to warrant some sort of wager on the over.
