CBB FREE PICK: East Carolina Pirates at Tulsa Golden Hurricane

#833 East Carolina +10.5 (Wednesday, February 12 @ 8 pm EST)

Tonight’s free pick comes out of the AAC as the East Carolina Pirates (10-14) take on the Tulsa Golden Hurricane (15-8). The Pirates snapped a three-game losing streak with a 81-67 win over Tulane on Saturday while the Golden Hurricane are now on a two-game losing streak after a surprise 7-1 run to open AAC play.

East Carolina’s raw offensive numbers aren’t too impressive: 69 ppg (251st) and 42% FG (262nd). However, in their last two wins they’ve shot north of 50% and on the season, actually rank a respectable 6th out of 12 AAC teams in terms of league play offensive efficiency. Defensively is where the Pirates really struggle as they rank 10th. The good news is that Tulsa isn’t much of a threat on the offensive end. Only twice in 10 conference games have they topped 70 points.

Where Tulsa gets you is on the defensive end. Currently second in the AAC in points per possession allowed (0.90) and 61st nationally in points per game allowed (64.8), the Golden Hurricane are very good at frustrating the opposition. But it’s hard to sustain such a one dimensional, all defense and no offense approach. Two games ago they allowed 72 to a woeful UConn offense and an even worse 83 to UCF which marked a season-best for the Knights.

One of Tulsa’s starters, Brandon Rachal, is a game-time decision and is looking more likely that he may sit this one out after missing Saturday’s game vs. UCF. The 6-6 do-everything guard has been one of the Golden Hurricane’s best players this season. If he sits it would be a huge advantage for the Pirates in their quest for an upset. But even if he plays, the time remains ripe to fade Tulsa. They provided a nice story with a 7-1 start and a buzzer beater win over Wichita State but this is more of a middle-of-the-road AAC team which by season’s end, should show in the results. Take the points.
