CBB FREE PICK: East Carolina Pirates vs. Memphis Tigers

#747 East Carolina +10.5 (Thursday, March 12 @ 10:30 pm EST)

The East Carolina Pirates (11-20) take on the Memphis Tigers (21-10) in the first round of the AAC Tournament. Despite suffering 20 losses, ECU has quietly been a fairly competitive team. Nearly half of those 20 losses were by single digits and a number of them could have very easily gone the Pirates’ way. Jayden Gardner is the team’s top player as he averages nearly a double-double with 19.7 ppg and 9.2 rpg. For a team that struggles to score at times, his 52% from the floor is much needed. Statistically, ECU doesn’t impress but they’ve held some betting value for much of the season with a very respectable 10-8 ATS mark in AAC play.

Memphis hasn’t been the same team since the loss of James Wiseman. The Tigers started the season 12-1 but have since gone just 9-9. Consistency has been the main issue; one game they play well and then another they completely fall apart. The Tigers are the 59th overall team in the KenPom rankings. Their defensive efficiency is an impressive fifth in the country while their offense is just 210th.

ECU game Memphis all it could handle in the long regular season meeting. The Pirates were just 4-of-20 from three and yet lost by only four, 77-73. Nearly every aspect of that game from shooting percentages to turnovers and fouls was very even. The Pirates were 14-point underdogs meaning oddsmakers haven’t made much of any adjustment when you account for the neutral floor. Knowing this could be their last game of the season, look for ECU and Gardner to lay it all on the line and play with tons of energy and excitement. They may not get the win but the Pirates are certainly capable of giving the Tigers another run for their money.
