College Football Betting Free Pick: Boise State Broncos at BYU Cougars
CFB FREE PICK: Boise State Broncos at BYU Cougars
#355 Boise State -7 (Saturday, October 19 @ 10:15 pm EST)
This play is quarterback injury vs. backup quarterback injury. You don’t get many opportunities to bet against a third-string quarterback versus this strong of a opponent but there’s that potential this weekend as Boise State travels to BYU. The Broncos are perfect 6-0 on the season and have been dominant against every foe. With an average margin of victory of 14 ppg and Bryan Harsin’s best defense in ages, Boise is within reach of a New Year’s 6 berth. Opponents are averaging 125 ypg and less than 4 ypc on the ground as future NFL defensive end Evan Weaver and company making it very difficult to run or pass versus this experienced defense.
BYU was a good follow early in the season behind big armed quarterback Zach Wilson and a experienced group of wide receivers. Some teams can get by with a mediocre head coach like Kalani Sitake who is now below .500 in his fourth year but his offenses have been always one-sided; either heavy pass or ultra conservative run-based.
Wilson is out for at least four more weeks but to make matters worse his backup, Jaren Hall, was knocked out late in last week’s loss to USF. Hall, who is a run-first quarterback and not an ideal fit to face Boise State’s ferocious front seven, is listed as questionable. If he cannot go it will be a walk-on or freshman taking his first-ever snaps.
Boise also may be without its starting quarterback injury as Hank Bachmeier suffered a rib injury against Hawaii. They are however much better equipped to deal with the situation thanks to a balanced offense. If Bachmeier cannot go, sophomore Chase Cord, who barely lost the preseason battle, will play in his third game. He knows the system inside and out with this being his third year on campus.
One team is playing for everything with a stronger offense, far superior defense, and better head coach. I think the -7 is light and recommend a play on the road chalk.
