CFB FREE PICK: Marshall Thundering Herd at Rice Owls
#355 Marshall -11 (Saturday, November 2 @ 3:30 pm EST)
Marshall travels to Rice who is now 0-8 and while the Owls have battled long and hard they remain among one of two FBS programs that are winless. As a result, it’s becoming apparent that Rice is looking towards 2020 and beyond as they have now played two quarterbacks in consecutive games by giving underclassmen Willie Green and Evan Marshman the snaps ahead of senior transfer Tom Stewart.
Marshall on the other hand is in the driver seat with consecutive wins over the leader of C-USA’s East Division, Western Kentucky, and Florida Atlantic who play each other Saturday. Marshall is very much playing for everything while their opposition is conducting on-field auditions for future years.
Marshall has benefited from maturing quarterback Isiah Green. The once injury prone Green has a 11-5 TD-to-INT ratio and his dual-threat ability has ignited the offense. With Green, all-conference running back Brenden Knox, and the emergence of two possible NFL tight ends, Xavier Gaines and Armani Levias, it is a bad matchup for some of the smaller C-USA defenses. Simply put, this offense should thrive versus Rice’s struggling pass defense.
Marshall boasts a terrific run defense that allows only 134 ypg (34th nationally) and Rice has shown no ability to do anything offensively outside of a power run game. With a quarterback to be named later situation for Rice I think this matchup is seriously one sided on both sides of the ball. One team is motivated and the other is interested in seeing what the future looks like. Lay the points and enjoy your Saturday.
