CBB FREE PICK: California Golden Bears vs. Stanford Cardinal

#648 UNDER 128.5 (Wednesday, March 11 @ 9 pm EST)

Considering the state of the program when he took over, California head coach Mark Fox deserves some credit for finishing PAC-12 play a respectable 7-11. Fox is a control freak who seems to take pride in ensuring his teams win as ugly as possible. Even with a few talented teams at Georgia, Fox rarely if ever allowed his teams to play with pace and with next to no talent in Berkeley, the Golden Bears routinely walk the ball up the floor and attempt shots with less than five seconds to go on the shot clock. Look no further than one of Cal’s best wins of the season; a 52-50, 61-possession win over rival Stanford. You can bet Fox had the tape of this game rolling in front of his team saying, this is how we need to play.

Stanford meanwhile is basically a more talented version of Cal. The Cardinal will play with some pace if the game and opponent dictates it, but they are knocking on the door of an NCAA Tournament berth because of a stout defense that ranks seventh nationally in efficiency. In two games against Cal, Stanford allowed 104 points on 35-of-111, 32% shooting. Even if the Bears manage to improve on those numbers, it’s hard to envision Stanford allowing more than 60 points. All signs point towards a low scoring, grind-it-out affair.
