FREE PICK: West Virginia Mountaineers vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders

#726 Texas Tech -12.5 (Thursday, March 14 @ 7 pm EST)

West Virginia has been able to save a little face in what’s been a tremendously disappointing campaign. Injuries, suspensions, frustration…the Mountaineers have dealt with it all. They have however won three of their last five including last night’s first round win over Oklahoma. Any other matchup and you’d look for Huggy’s crew to potentially continue its improved play. Unfortunately, Texas Tech is a nightmare of a matchup. Obviously when you think of the Red Raiders you think of stingy defense; a unit that currently ranks first nationally in efficiency. But what makes TTU even more dangerous moving forward is that the offense has started to round into form. Unlike West Virginia, who is a notoriously poor shooting team and has popped for a few hot nights, Texas Tech’s offense has been consistently good for over a month. After losing to Kansas back on February 2, Texas Tech has averaged nearly 80 ppg and 1.20 points per possession. Six of those nine wins came by double-digits including an 81-50 beat down of West Virginia. In order to compete as an underdog against this caliber of opponent, you need to shot well from deep and take care of the basketball. Of the 10 teams in the Big 12, West Virginia ranks dead last in both 3-point shooting (29.6%) and turnover rate (22.2%). Bad matchup indeed.
