FREE PICK: Kentucky Wildcats at Vanderbilt Commodores
#636 Vanderbilt +5 first half (Tuesday, January 29 @ 9 pm EST)
Kentucky has been notorious for getting off to some slows starts this season. They’ve remedied the problem somewhat of late by jumping out to early leads against Mississippi State and Auburn but last weekend, at home in a primetime game against Kansas, the Wildcats trailed 16-6 with less than 10 minutes to go in the first half. These slow starts are perhaps a bit random — you’ll notice only the “bad start” games get play in the media — but to a certain degree they make sense as Kentucky is still a super-young team with a constant target on its back. Opposing teams, especially those in desperate need of a marquee win, typically come out with intense focus and effort against Kentucky. Case in point, the Vanderbilt Commodores. A few weeks back, Vandy waltzed into Rupp Arena and jumped out to a 16-4 lead only to eventually be overwhelmed by UK’s talent in a 56-47 loss. Note that in the game, the ‘Dores went exclusively zone which frustrated Kentucky and more importantly slowed the pace of the game down. I would expect a similar approach tonight. Spot-wise, not an ideal one for the favorite. Kentucky just ripped off wins over Auburn, Mississippi State and an ESPN Game Day victory over Kansas. They also have rival Florida on deck. Home underdog, which last week led the no. 1 ranked team in the country by six with 1:30 to go, worth a look in the first half.
