FREE PICK: Montana State Bobcats at Idaho State Bengals
#681 Montana State -1 (Thursday, February 14 @ 9 pm EST)
Montana State has one of the more talented teams in the Big Sky, led by Tyler Hall and a host of upperclassmen. They began league play 4-1 but stumbled losing four out of their next five. The Bobcats have since righted the ship with three straight wins including an impressive 69-66 win at Northern Colorado. Idaho State is 5-8 in league play; the five wins against teams that are a combined 20 games under .500. Against the top three teams in the league — Montana, Northern Colorado, and Weber State — the Bengals lost by 11, 24, and 17, respectively. ISU’s weakness, as it has been throughout head coach Bills Evans’ tenure, is defense. They rank 350th nationally and 10th out 11 in the Big Sky in defensive efficiency. That doesn’t bode well for tonight’s matchup as Montana State ranks second in the league in offensive efficiency. This strength vs. weakness certainly played out in the first meeting with MSU winning in Bozeman, 104-84. The Big Sky can produce a lot of flighty results due in large part to travel so when I do bet a road team, I generally like to do it on the first of back-to-backs. Note too the importance of this game for MSU with looming road trips to league heavyweights Weber State and Montana.
