College Football Betting Free Pick: Coastal Carolina Chanticleers at Kansas Jayhawks

CFB FREE PICK: Coastal Carolina Chanticleers at Kansas Jayhawks

#354 UNDER 54.5 (Saturday, September 7 @ 7 pm EST)

On Wednesday’s BettorIQ podcast I mentioned being confident that Les Miles was worth a handful of unders this season. Saturday looks like a solid opportunity with the total now at 54.5 as the Jayhawks play host to Coastal Carolina.

KU’s Week 1 win over FCS Indiana State was anything but pretty. The Jayhawks struggled to run the football (3.0 ypc) and fumbled three times; one of which resulting in a touchdown. It also took Kansas until nearly mid-way through the third quarter to produce an offensive touchdown and when it did occur, they missed the extra point. We laugh at Miles and his quirky ways but he’s no dummy and knows the only way to compete with this level of talent is to play slow and attempt to shorten the game — even against the likes of Indiana State and Coastal Carolina. Saturday also may be Kansas’ last chance at victory so expect Miles’ conservative nature to once again show.

Last season, Coastal Carolina was one of only a few teams in college football that snapped the ball every 30 seconds. Like Kansas, the thought process is simple: control the clock and run the football with the hopes of sticking around. After running the ball 66% of the time in 2018, Coastal attempted 43 passes vs. 30 rushing attempts in Week 1 and it backfired as quarterback Fred Payton threw four interceptions in a 30-23 loss to Eastern Michigan. Look for a far more balanced approach this week with Kansas’ rush defense much softer than what Coastal faced with EMU.

With two teams projected to play at a slower than average pace and the total north of the key number of 51, we’ll look to play the game under.
