FREE PICK: Seattle Mariners at New York Yankees

#965 Seattle +131 (Wednesday, May 7 @ 6:35 pm EST)

It’s not easy backing a team that is 6-17 in their last 23 games and has found every which way to lose baseball games lately. Last night, Seattle gave up three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to blow a 4-2 lead against the Yankees. But things line up nicely for a bounce back today for the Mariners in New York. Yusei Kikuchi takes the hill for the M’s and he’s been really solid in his rookie campaign. Kikuchi owns a 3.98 ERA and a 35-9 K/BB ratio in 40.2 innings of work. He’s coming off of his best performance of the season last time out in Cleveland where he pitched seven innings while allowing just one run on three hits and posted an impressive 10 strikeouts (just one walk). His velocity has been slowing creeping up since his first start and he looks confident on the mound.

The Yankees are an absolute mash unit at the moment as nearly 40% of their roster is on the injured list. Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton are the big bats missing from the lineup but there are plenty of other key guys out. The Yankees have shown off their impressive depth by putting up a terrific 21-14 record this season despite all of the misfortune. They have been aided by a relatively weak schedule, however. Highly-touted Jonathan Loaisiga gets the ball for the Yanks on Wednesday. His stuff is elite but he’s had trouble locating his pitches so far this season in five games between Triple-A and the big leagues. His 2.70 ERA in three appearances in the bigs is deceiving due to a low BABIP and high strand rate. I think injuries will eventually catch up to the Yankees and regression is on the way for Loaisiga. Play Seattle.
