College Football Betting: Conference Championship Scenarios (Update)
We’ve reached the final week of the college football regular season and a lot is still yet to be determined in terms of who will represent in their respective conference championships. Here’s a quick rundown of what’s at stake this week.
ACC – Clemson will await the winner of Friday’s Virginia Tech at Virginia game. The Hokies are one of the hottest teams in the country with three straight wins and six of their last seven — the lone loss by a single point at Notre Dame. After starting the season 1-5 ATS, Tech has covered five straight, beating the point spread by an average of just over three touchdowns. No surprise to see the market move on the Hokies as they went from +1.5 to -2.5 and leaning towards -3 for Saturday’s game vs. the Cavaliers.
AAC – Cincinnati is in by way of winning the East Division. The West is still up in the air though Memphis has the inside track by needing a home win over the Bearcats on Friday. The point spread (Memphis -11) is fairly indicative of Cincinnati not having anything to play for. Should the Tigers lose, Navy would then have a shot with at win at Houston on Saturday. If both teams lose, Memphis is in.
Big Ten – The winner of Saturday’s Wisconsin at Minnesota game will face Ohio State. Oddsmakers and bettors still lukewarm towards the Golden Gophers who are currently +2.5 home underdogs to the Badgers.
Big 12 – Baylor and Oklahoma are locked in though both still with plenty to play for in terms of the playoffs.
PAC-12 – Despite its loss to Arizona State, and being dropped from the playoff discussion, Oregon will represent the North Division. In the South, Utah just needs a win over Colorado as -29 chalk. Should the Utes get upset, USC would slip in by way of its win over Utah earlier this season.
SEC – Georgia plays LSU.
Mountain West – Boise State plays Hawaii.
Sun Belt – Appalachian State plays UL-Lafayette.
MAC – Miami-Ohio won the East Division. It’s down to Western Michigan and Central Michigan in the West. If the Broncos beat Northern Illinois or the Chippewas lose to Toledo, they are win. CMU gets in with a WMU loss and win over Toledo. Note that WMU/NIU play on Tuesday. The outcome will obviously have an impact on the Toledo/CMU point spread for Friday.
C-USA – In the East, if Florida Atlantic beats Southern Miss, the Owls are in. If FAU loses and Marshall beats FIU, the Thundering Herd are in. If both teams lose, Marshall gets in by way of beating Florida Atlantic earlier this season. In the West, three teams — Louisiana Tech, UAB, and Southern Miss — are all 5-2. UAB owns the tiebreaker over Louisiana Tech. Louisiana Tech owns the tiebreaker over Southern Miss. Southern Miss owns the tiebreaker over UAB. LT is -21 vs. UTSA. UAB is +1.5 at North Texas. And Southern Miss is +8.5 at Florida Atlantic.
