MLB Betting: Astros Now 2-1 World Series Favorites After Acquiring Greinke


With the MLB trade deadline passed, oddsmakers were quick to adjust their World Series odds. There were a handful of moves — or lack thereof — that have the potential to impact a team’s chances to win it all. The biggest move was of course the Houston Astros picking up Zack Greinke and bolstering an already stellar starting rotation. Below is a breakdown of each team’s World Series odds according to Las Vegas’ Superbook as well as FanGraphs’ World Series probability.

Vegas Odds: +200
FanGraphs Odds: 26.4%
Deadline Moves: Snagged Greinke from Arizona and also added Joe Biagini and Aaron Sanchez, who is not that far removed from posting a 3.6 WAR season.

Vegas Odds: +300
FanGraphs Odds: 17.3%
Deadline Moves: Reliever Adam Kolarek (Rays) who is nothing more than a lefty vs. lefty specialist.

Vegas Odds: +600
FanGraphs Odds: 13.6%
Deadline Moves: Despite the starting staff being in shambles, the Yankees picked up a no-name outfielder (Terrance Gore) and reliever (Alfredo Garcia).

FanGraphs Odds: 6.9%
Deadline Moves: The Braves were reportedly in the running for Greinke but decided to pass. They did however add some much needed help to a bullpen that currently owns a league-worst -0.7 WAR.

Deadline Moves: Added Nicholas Castellanos from the Tigers; a solid platoon option vs. lefties. Also picked up Houston’s Tony Kemp who can play multiple positions and Derek Holland and David Phelps.

Deadline Moves: Added reliever Sam Dyson (Giants) who is quietly having a great season (2.74 FIP, 1.1 WAR).

Deadline Moves: Crickets

Deadline Moves: Got rid of Trevor Bauer and brought in Yasiel Piug. Bauer can be a clown but he’s also a top 20 starter. Piug meanwhile hits the occasional dinger but not much else. The Indians’ outfield however has combined for only 52 home runs this season.

FanGraphs Odds: 2.6%
Deadline Moves: Handful of small, Rays-type moves. Milwaukee’s Jesus Aguilar offers some potential as a right-handed power bat.

Red Sox
Vegas Odds: +3000
FanGraphs Odds: 3.7%
Deadline Moves: Like St. Louis, Boston’s front office decided against making any big moves. Red Sox currently with less than a 45% chance to make the postseason.

Vegas Odds: +3000
FanGraphs Odds: 1.3%
Deadline Moves: Needed pitching help and went out and got Jordan Lyles, Drew Pomeranz, Jake Faria and Ray Black.

Vegas Odds: +3000
FanGraphs Odds: 4.7%
Deadline Moves: Attempting to overhaul woeful bullpen, Nats picked up three middle-of-the-road relievers.

FanGraphs Odds: 0.3%
Deadline Moves: Pick up now injured Jay Bruce back in June. Recently added Corey Dickerson as well as veteran starters Drew Smyly, Jason Vargas, and Dan Straily.

Deadline Moves: Similar to the Phillies, added veteran starters Tanner Roark and Homer Bailey.
